American Songbook

The scope of this group is intended to cover the popular music and songs that arose out of the American musical theatre, films and Tin Pan Alley.

Thus including the works of the likes of Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, the Gershwin brothers, Jerome Kern, Johnny Mercer; as interpreted by the likes of Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole etc. We will not ignore the younger singers who have more recently interpreted thes 'standards', such as Michael Buble, Diana Krall, Matt Morro etc.
This will naturally lead to the consideration of the works of bands, arrangers and ochestrators who did so much to enhance the work of the original composers and lyricists.

This will be done through the study of recordings, films and documentaries.
